What Can You Expect Dental Implants to Feel Like?

Mar 01, 2023

Are you looking forward to your dental implant treatment? Dental implants allow you to regain a beautiful and functional set of teeth. But how will they feel in my mouth? You may ask. It is a myth that dental implants don’t look or feel like natural teeth. There are many reasons why most patients opt for dental implants, as there are reasons why they hesitate about them. However, the good news is that there is a lot of proof that, other than their benefits, dental implants will look and feel natural in your mouth. Visit our dentist in NW Calgary if you want to plunge into a discussion of understanding dental implants.

What is a Dental Implant

Regardless of why you have a tooth gap, dental implants can restore your tooth and smile. Dental implants are metal frames that are surgically placed into the jawbone. You will be administered local anesthesia to numb the area and make the procedure painless. Visit us at Springhill Dental for more information about dental implants.

How Do Dental Implants Feel

You will not experience any sensations after a dental implant is placed. However, you may experience pain from the surrounding gums. Dental implants are not attached to the roots and nerves that make you feel heat, cold or intense pressure.

However, aside from that, dental implants will look and function just as your natural tooth would. They are designed to blend with the surrounding teeth and tissues.

Although dental implants are made of metal, one shouldn’t have a lingering metal taste in their mouth. However, be sure to experience strange sensations the first time you eat. Once you have fully healed, the feeling will eventually go away.

What to Expect After Dental Implants

Here is an insight into what one should expect after a dental implant in NW Calgary.

The First 24 Hours

During the first 24 hours after receiving your dental implant, you will be a little drowsy due to the anesthesia used in the procedure. Because of this, our dentists recommend that you arrange for transportation home with your friend, relative, or a taxi. You will also notice blood spots from the surgical area, which gauze sponges can control. Remember to change the gauze regularly. Get rid of the gauze if the bleeding has stopped.

Avoid taking hot foods or beverages but stick to soft food substances that are tepid or cold. Also, avoid using straws for soups, yogurts, and other drinks. The anesthesia will wear off after two to four hours and after it does, expect some pain. You can manage the pain by taking prescribed painkillers from your dentist.

Three Days Later

You may notice some facial swelling and bruising, which is normal after surgery. Relive the swelling by placing an ice pack on the side of the affected face. Take breaks while you are using the ice packs. Alternate hot and cold compresses to reduce the swelling considerably.

After Three to Seven Days

The facial swelling should have disappeared three to five days later. By now, you can go back to your routine. However, stay off from strenuous activities.

Two Weeks Later

You will start to notice massive improvement at this time. During this healing stage, you can reintroduce other types of foods into your diet. However, it would help if you tried avoiding crunchy and chewy foods.

After Two Weeks and Beyond

By this time, your implant is on the journey of healing and integrating with the bone and gums. You will have to visit your dentist after a month to ensure everything is going well. Finally, the final fitting of the abutment and the prosthetic crown will take after four to six months, depending on how fast your recovery is.

Complications

Patients rarely experience complications or severe discomfort as they adjust to their new teeth. However, if you suspect that you are developing them, seek immediate help from our denture care center. Hopefully, it will not take long before you can smile again.

Dental implants will also feel like teeth and provide you with outstanding aesthetics and function that will make you forget that you have ever suffered from tooth loss.
